Pirates’ Early January Business Signals Serious Title Intent

Orlando Pirates have laid down an early marker in the January transfer window, confirming both a key signing and a squad exit as they position themselves for a serious push in the second half of the PSL season.

The Buccaneers announced the arrival of Andre de Jong from Stellenbosch FC on Monday, a move that reinforces a squad already leading the league. De Jong joins Pirates after several impressive seasons at Stellies, where he established himself as one of the most consistent and tactically disciplined forwards in the Premiership.

His signing appears to be a calculated one rather than a reactive move. Pirates are not chasing from behind — they are already top of the standings — and the decision to bring in a proven PSL performer suggests a focus on maintaining momentum rather than fixing weaknesses.

De Jong’s influence at Stellenbosch was built on reliability, work rate and intelligent movement, qualities that could prove invaluable as the title race intensifies. With minimal adaptation time required, he offers immediate competition and depth at a stage of the season where margins become increasingly fine.

While Pirates were strengthening, they also confirmed the departure of midfielder Sinoxolo Kwayiba, who has completed a permanent return to Chippa United.

Kwayiba joined Pirates in July after catching the eye at the Chilli Boys, but his spell in black and white never gained traction. Under head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou, the 25-year-old struggled to secure a regular place in the matchday squad, making just four substitute appearances across all competitions.

A combination of limited opportunities and fitness challenges meant his Pirates career failed to take off, and a move back to Chippa United now offers him the chance to reset and rebuild with consistent game time.

Beyond the transfer activity, the broader picture remains highly encouraging for Pirates. The Buccaneers currently sit top of the PSL table with 28 points from 12 matches, placing them firmly in control as the second round of the season approaches.

They are also set to benefit from the return of nine players who were away on international duty following Bafana Bafana’s exit from the 2025 AFCON. A reunited squad, combined with smart recruitment, could give Pirates a decisive edge in the title race.

While De Jong is the first confirmed January arrival, there is growing belief that he may not be the last. Squad depth has often been the difference between contenders and champions, and Pirates appear determined to avoid past pitfalls.

Whether this latest move proves decisive will only become clear in the months ahead, but one thing is certain — Orlando Pirates have sent a clear message: the title is firmly in their sights
