Broos Relishing ‘Special’ World Cup Opener as Bafana Prepare for Mexico Showdown at Packed Azteca

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has described South Africa’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match against co-hosts Mexico as a “special and fantastic experience” as the national team prepares for one of the biggest occasions in its modern football history.

South Africa will kick off their World Cup campaign against Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Thursday, in the tournament’s opening match. The encounter is expected to attract a global television audience of millions, while a capacity crowd is anticipated inside one of football’s most famous stadiums.

According to the SAFA Media Team, Broos believes the occasion will provide a unique challenge for a squad that has never before experienced the atmosphere of a World Cup opening match.

“You know, it will be a special and fantastic experience for us because my players have never played in this kind of situation before,” Broos said, as quoted by the SAFA Media Team.

“So it will be very important for us to stick to the game plan and not listen to what is happening in the stands. We all know that there will be thousands of Mexicans inside the stadium and maybe a few South Africans.”

While South Africa are expected to be heavily outnumbered by home supporters, Broos says the team is drawing confidence from the backing they have received from supporters across the country in the build-up to the tournament.

“We know that we have the support of the nation and we felt it in the last few days, and last week when we started the preparations (for the World Cup) in South Africa,” Broos told the SAFA Media Team.

“All of South Africa is supporting us. This is something we have to remember on Thursday when the game starts, that we are playing for our nation. We are playing for all those people who believe in us.”

South Africa enter the match unbeaten in their final two preparation fixtures, although both ended in draws. Before departing for North America, Broos’ men were held to a goalless draw by Nicaragua at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

They then followed that result with a 1-1 draw against Jamaica in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Estadio Hidalgo in Pachuca on Saturday. The match formed part of the team’s final preparations before the start of the global showpiece.

Thursday’s clash will carry added significance as it comes exactly 16 years after South Africa and Mexico met in the opening game of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

That memorable encounter at Soccer City in Johannesburg ended 1-1 and remains one of the most iconic matches in South African football history. Siphiwe Tshabalala sent the nation into celebration with a stunning opening goal before Rafael Márquez equalised for Mexico.

Now, 16 years later, Bafana Bafana have another opportunity to make history on football’s grandest stage as they face the same opponents in another World Cup curtain-raiser.

With the spotlight of the football world fixed firmly on Estadio Azteca, Broos and his players will be hoping to deliver a performance worthy of the occasion and begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey with a statement result against the tournament hosts.
