Bafana Bafana Eye Another World Cup Milestone as Broos Sends Clear Message Before Canada Showdown
After making history by reaching the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time, Bafana Bafana have another opportunity to rewrite the record books when they face Canada in the Round of 32 on Sunday evening.
Hugo Broos’ side booked their place in the knockout rounds with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over South Korea on Thursday morning (South African time), a result that secured South Africa’s progression after they had opened their campaign with a 2–0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico.
Now, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake, Bafana will take on Canada at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with kickoff scheduled for 21:00 (SAST).
Victory would see South Africa reach the last 16 of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup for the first time, marking yet another historic achievement for a team that has continued to grow in confidence as the tournament has progressed.
Despite the magnitude of Sunday’s encounter, Broos insists his players should embrace the occasion rather than feel weighed down by expectation.

Speaking to SABC Sport after Thursday’s win over South Korea, the Bafana coach reflected on his team’s improvement since the opening match and encouraged his players to continue believing in themselves.
“The first game was not good, but we became better and better. Now we’ll see what happens in the next game. We don’t have to force anything; we just have to enjoy it and try. Maybe, who knows, we can go to the third round.”
For South Africa, that “third round” would be the Round of 16, making Sunday’s clash one of the most significant matches in the national team’s recent history.
Bafana’s victory over South Korea highlighted a side finding its rhythm at exactly the right moment. Defensive discipline, improved teamwork and greater composure in attack were all evident as Broos’ men secured the result that guaranteed their place in the knockout phase.
Those qualities will be tested again against a Canadian side equally determined to extend its World Cup journey.
With qualification matches now behind them, there is no margin for error. The winner progresses, while the loser heads home.
