Bafana’s Historic World Cup Journey Ends, Proteas Women Reach Semi-Finals, Junior Boks Hit Century

South African sport delivered another emotional and memorable weekend, with Bafana Bafana’s remarkable FIFA World Cup campaign ending in heartbreaking fashion, the Proteas Women booking a place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals, and the Junior Springboks launching their title defence with a record-breaking victory.

  1. Bafana Bafana Bow Out After Stoppage-Time World Cup Heartbreak

South Africa’s dream run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to a painful end after Canada snatched a dramatic 1-0 victory in stoppage time during their Round of 32 clash in Los Angeles.

Hugo Broos’ side produced another disciplined defensive performance against a relentless Canadian attack, with captain Ronwen Williams making a series of outstanding saves while defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi impressed with a composed display at the back.

Just as extra time appeared inevitable, Canada’s breakthrough arrived in the 92nd minute. Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio reacted quickest to a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area before firing a first-time effort into the bottom corner to send his side into the last 16.

Although the defeat ended South Africa’s campaign, Bafana leave the tournament with plenty to celebrate after reaching the knockout stages for the first time and recording their deepest-ever FIFA World Cup run.

  1. Proteas Women Secure World Cup Semi-Final Spot

The Proteas Women are through to the semi-finals of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup after defeating Bangladesh and receiving a helping hand from Australia.

South Africa successfully chased down Bangladesh’s total of 117/5, reaching the target with four balls remaining to claim a hard-fought four-wicket victory.

Their qualification was only confirmed after Australia defeated India in the final Group stage fixture, ensuring the Proteas progressed to the last four.

The reward is a blockbuster semi-final against tournament hosts England at The Oval on Thursday. Having finished runners-up in each of the last two editions, South Africa will be determined to go one step further and book a place in the final at Lord’s.

  1. Junior Springboks Make Powerful Statement in Title Defence

The Junior Springboks could hardly have asked for a better start to their World Rugby U20 Championship title defence after overwhelming Uruguay 104-7 in their Pool A opener in Tbilisi, Georgia.

South Africa dominated from the opening whistle, racing into a 50-0 halftime lead before completing an astonishing 16-try performance to comfortably surpass the 100-point mark.

Attention now turns to Thursday’s clash against tournament hosts Georgia, where the Junior Boks will aim to continue their impressive form and strengthen their grip on Pool A.

It was another unforgettable few days for South African sport. While Bafana Bafana’s historic World Cup journey came to a heartbreaking conclusion, the Proteas Women and Junior Springboks continue to chase global success.
