“Nothing Changes for Us” – Ouaddou’s Bold Message Before Sundowns Showdown
The Betway Premiership title race takes centre stage tonight as Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns lock horns in a high-stakes clash at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.
First meets second in what could prove to be a defining moment in the 2025/26 league campaign. With kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm, all eyes will be on whether Pirates can extend their advantage at the summit – or if Sundowns can breathe fresh life into their title defence.
Orlando Pirates head into the blockbuster encounter in formidable form. Over the weekend, the Buccaneers produced a commanding 3–0 victory over Marumo Gallants at the Orlando Amstel Arena, further underlining their credentials as serious title contenders.
That result moved Pirates to 38 points after 16 matches, built on an impressive record of 12 wins, two draws and just two defeats in the Betway Premiership this season. The victory also opened up a six-point gap at the top of the standings.
The statistics paint an even stronger picture. The Sea Robbers have won their last 11 consecutive home league matches and have not suffered a defeat in the league since 12 August – a run that has injected belief and consistency into their campaign.

Standing in their way are the reigning champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.
Masandawana currently sit second on the Betway Premiership log, six points behind Pirates. However, the Tshwane giants hold a crucial game in hand – meaning victory in Johannesburg would significantly reduce the gap and swing momentum back in their favour.
It is a rare scenario for Sundowns to be cast as chasers rather than frontrunners, but their experience in high-pressure situations makes them a dangerous opponent in matches of this magnitude.
Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has acknowledged the significance of the fixture but insists his side will not be weighed down by the occasion.
“I mean, it doesn’t change too much for us,” Ouaddou said ahead of the clash. “That’s why I really encourage my players to be focused on our target and to go without any pressure – to be really free in their mind and to feel strong, to feel the trust that they are doing well.”
While recognising that the encounter carries extra weight as one of South African football’s classic rivalries, Ouaddou believes composure will be key.
“Of course, it’s a classical. We have to elevate the level of our focus, the level of how we want to play – a little bit more focused than other games – but to go really without any pressure.”
With Pirates seeking to tighten their grip at the top and Sundowns determined to close the gap, the stakes could hardly be higher. A Pirates victory would stretch their lead and strengthen their title ambitions, while a Sundowns win would re-open the race and remind the league why they are defending champions.
Ninety minutes at the FNB Stadium could reshape the Betway Premiership standings – and perhaps the trajectory of the season itself.
