Rockets Stun Sundowns! TS Galaxy Knock Out Six-Time Champions in Nedbank Cup Shock
TS Galaxy produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2025/26 Nedbank Cup campaign after eliminating six-time champions Mamelodi Sundowns with a commanding 2–0 victory in the Round of 16 at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium.
The Rockets defied the odds against the Betway Premiership heavyweights, delivering a disciplined and clinical display that left the tournament favourites chasing shadows for most of the encounter.
TS Galaxy seized control in the 18th minute when Siphamandla Ngwenya marked his debut in dream fashion. The young forward capitalised on a costly error from Divine Lunga, firing past experienced goalkeeper Denis Onyango to hand the hosts a surprise lead.
The goal rattled Sundowns, who had entered the fixture fresh from a 2–1 Betway Premiership victory over Orlando Pirates earlier in the week.
Galaxy doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute. Seluleko Mahlambi was brought down inside the box by Thato Sibiya, and referee pointed to the spot. Junior Zindoga stepped up and converted confidently, putting the Rockets firmly in control and leaving Sundowns with a mountain to climb.
Despite their depth and experience, the Tshwane giants struggled to recover from the early setbacks.
Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso made 10 changes to the starting line-up that defeated Orlando Pirates in the league. The heavy rotation suggested a strategic gamble in the cup competition – one that ultimately backfired as TS Galaxy executed their game plan with precision.

TS Galaxy head coach Adnan Beganovic hailed his side’s tactical discipline and the contribution of his younger players after the match.
“First of all, I am happy because of how we managed the game, how we pushed young players in the starting XI, and how we prepared our game,” Beganovic told SABC Sport. “We pressed exactly how we planned, and the young players scored beautiful goals. I’m especially happy because he made his debut and scored – that’s very important.”
The Bosnian mentor also highlighted the importance of preparation and execution, pointing out that Galaxy’s pressing strategy was key to forcing mistakes and creating scoring opportunities.
The 2019 Nedbank Cup champions now await their next opponents, with the quarter-final draw scheduled for Monday, 23 February 2026 at 18:30.
For TS Galaxy, this victory is more than just progression to the last eight – it is a statement result against one of South Africa’s most dominant clubs. For Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, the defeat marks an abrupt end to their cup ambitions and raises questions about squad rotation and priorities as the season intensifies across competitions.
One thing is certain: the Nedbank Cup has its first major shock – and the Rockets are flying.
