Broos Reveals Why Pachuca Is Perfect for Bafana’s 2026 World Cup Mission – “We Need Altitude”
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has thrown his full support behind South Africa’s chosen 2026 FIFA World Cup base camp, revealing that altitude – not comfort – was the decisive factor behind the move to Pachuca, Mexico.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) officially confirmed on Thursday that the national team will establish its tournament headquarters in Pachuca during the upcoming global showpiece.
Bafana Bafana will train at the prestigious Universidad del Futbol and stay at the nearby Camino Real Pachuca – a five-star hotel set among gardens and forests, offering a tranquil environment designed to aid recovery and performance.
However, according to Broos, the decision was primarily strategic.
South Africa’s opening Group A fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be against hosts Mexico on 11 June 2026 at the iconic Estadio Azteca – a venue situated at significant altitude in Mexico City.
“Not because it’s Mexico, but because we have to play that game at altitude,” Broos explained from Pachuca after the agreement was finalized.

Beyond the elevation advantage, Broos praised the infrastructure available at the Pachuca base. The Universidad del Futbol offers two quality training pitches, a fully equipped fitness centre, and access to medical facilities, including a hospital – key components for elite tournament preparation.
“I’m very pleased with the facilities,” Broos added. “Everything we need to have a good preparation for that match is here.”
The logistical convenience of Pachuca also played a role in the decision. Its proximity to Mexico City will allow for smoother travel arrangements ahead of the tournament opener, minimizing disruptions in the final build-up.
Facing the host nation in the opening match adds another layer of intensity – and altitude preparation could prove decisive.
With the base camp confirmed and preparations already underway, all eyes will be on whether this calculated move to Pachuca provides Bafana Bafana with the edge they need when they kick off their World Cup journey against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in June.
