“We Showed What Orlando Pirates Is Made Of” — Chaine Reacts After Derby Masterclass at FNB Stadium
Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine delivered an emotional response at the FNB Stadium on Saturday after the Buccaneers’ emphatic 3–0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby.
Speaking to Pirates media at the stadium shortly after the final whistle, Chaine described the result as a moment of pride for the squad – particularly given the adversity they had faced in recent weeks.
“No words. Proud of the boys. What a Saturday afternoon,” Chaine said pitch-side.
“We came from the back of two defeats, doing something we didn’t plan for – but it’s football. I think the mental strength from the guys to come here and show everyone what Orlando Pirates is made of… today I’m proud of the boys.”
The derby triumph represented a dramatic shift in narrative for Orlando Pirates, who had endured a difficult spell prior to the clash. Consecutive Betway Premiership defeats to Mamelodi Sundowns and a shock Nedbank Cup Round of 16 elimination at the hands of Casric Stars had intensified scrutiny around the team.
Instead of allowing doubt to creep in, Pirates responded with one of their most commanding displays of the campaign.
Tshepang Moremi opened the scoring to set the tone before Oswin Appollis extended the lead. Evidence Makgopa added the third goal to seal a comprehensive victory that left Chiefs struggling to contain Pirates’ intensity and attacking movement.

The 3–0 result propelled Pirates to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings, where they are level on 41 points with Sundowns after 18 matches. Pirates lead on goal difference after Masandawana’s 3–1 victory over Sekhukhune United on Sunday.
For Chiefs, the defeat had immediate consequences. Amakhosi dropped to fifth place following Durban City’s 1–0 win against Marumo Gallants, tightening the race for positions in the upper half of the table.
While Saturday’s derby performance reignited belief among the Pirates faithful, attention now turns to maintaining consistency.
Pirates travel to Polokwane for a midweek Betway Premiership clash against Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium, another crucial fixture in an increasingly competitive title race.
Chiefs, meanwhile, will aim to recover quickly when they face Richards Bay FC at Richards Bay Stadium on Tuesday.
The derby may already be decided, but Chaine’s words at FNB Stadium capture what the result truly symbolised: resilience, response, and a reminder that Pirates remain firmly in the hunt for major honours this season.
