Broos Laments Missed Chances as Bafana Fall to Panama — Mbokazi’s Wonder Goal Not Enough

South Africa national football team head coach Hugo Broos has pointed to missed opportunities as the decisive factor after Bafana Bafana suffered a 2–1 defeat to Panama national football team in an international friendly at the DHL Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.

The result brought an end to the two-match friendly series between the sides, following a 1–1 draw in Durban the previous week.

After a competitive first half, Panama broke the deadlock in the 58th minute through José Córdoba, putting the visitors in control.

Bafana responded swiftly. Just six minutes later, 20-year-old defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi produced a moment of brilliance, unleashing a powerful long-range strike that left the goalkeeper with no chance and brought the home crowd to life.

However, the momentum proved short-lived. Jiovany Ramos restored Panama’s lead in the 76th minute, capitalising on a period where South Africa struggled to regain control of the match.

Speaking after the match, Broos acknowledged his side’s overall performance but admitted their lack of cutting edge in front of goal once again proved costly.

“South Africa played a very good game. We had three open chances and again we didn’t score,” Broos said.

“If we had taken one of those chances, maybe it would have been a different game. In the second half, we were overpowered physically by Panama, and with the changes we made, our organisation was a little bit lost.”

The Belgian tactician’s assessment reflects a recurring concern, with Bafana creating opportunities but struggling to convert them into goals.

Despite the defeat, Mbokazi’s performance stood out as a major positive. The young defender, who plays for Chicago Fire FC, impressed both defensively and offensively, with his stunning equaliser quickly gaining widespread attention.

Praised by fans and observers alike, the goal has been described as one of the highlights of the international break, underlining the youngster’s growing reputation.

The two-match series against Panama formed part of South Africa’s preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While the results – a draw and a defeat – may not fully satisfy the technical team, the fixtures provided valuable insights into the squad’s strengths and areas needing improvement.

For Broos and his players, the focus now shifts to addressing their inefficiency in front of goal – a concern that could prove decisive in more competitive fixtures ahead.
