“Pressure Is Needed” – Parker Embraces Final Test as TS Galaxy Chase Nedbank Cup Glory Against Durban City
TS Galaxy interim head coach Bernard Parker has acknowledged the weight of expectation ahead of Saturday’s Nedbank Cup final, insisting pressure will be key as his side prepares for a high-stakes showdown with Durban City FC.
The two Betway Premiership sides will meet in the 2026 Nedbank Cup final at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, with kickoff scheduled for 18:00.
Parker’s rise to the first-team role comes under challenging circumstances. The former Bafana Bafana striker was promoted from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge setup following the dismissal of Adnan Beganovic, who was sacked after a poor run of results that yielded just one point from 10 Betway Premiership matches.
Since taking charge last week, Parker has already overseen his first match – a 0-0 league draw against Magesi FC – but now faces a defining test in the Nedbank Cup final.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Parker admitted that pressure is inevitable at this level but believes it can bring the best out of his team.
“It’s pressure all the time in this business, for a player and for a coach,” Parker said. “It’s about making sure that we handle the pressure well. Without pressure you won’t perform – so it’s needed. It’s about how we manage it to perform at our maximum on game day.”
TS Galaxy return to the Nedbank Cup final for the first time since their remarkable 2019 triumph, when they became the only second-tier side to win the competition after defeating Kaizer Chiefs 1–0.
This season, the Mpumalanga-based club have once again shown their resilience in knockout football. They booked their place in the final after a hard-fought semi-final against Milford FC, drawing 1–1 after extra time before advancing 4-3 on penalties.
The Rockets will now be aiming to add a second Nedbank Cup title to their history – this time as a top-flight side.
Standing in their way is a Durban City team hungry to make history of their own.
Formerly known as Maritzburg United before their 2024 relocation and rebranding, Durban City have enjoyed a strong campaign and currently sit higher than Galaxy in the Betway Premiership standings.
They secured their place in the final with a narrow 1–0 victory over Casric Stars in the semi-finals – another example of their ability to grind out results in high-pressure encounters.
Saturday’s final presents a golden opportunity for the club to claim their first major trophy under their new identity.
With both teams exceeding expectations throughout the tournament, the 2026 Nedbank Cup final has taken on a unique narrative – a clash between two ambitious sides determined to seize their moment.
