“Don’t Give Up on This Team” – Government Rallies Behind Bafana After World Cup Defeat
South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign may have begun with disappointment, but Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has urged the nation to continue backing Bafana Bafana following their opening defeat to hosts Mexico national football team.
Bafana suffered a 2-0 loss in their Group A opener at the Estadio Azteca on Thursday evening, leaving coach Hugo Broos and his players with work to do as they seek a place in the knockout stages.
South Africa’s hopes of a positive start were dealt an early blow when midfielder Siphephelo Sithole lost possession in his own half, allowing Mexican forward Julián Quiñones to capitalize and open the scoring after just nine minutes.
Despite attempting to settle into the contest, Bafana struggled to recover from the setback and faced an even greater challenge after the interval.
The match turned further against South Africa when both Sithole and veteran midfielder Themba Zwane were shown red cards, reducing Broos’ side to nine men for the closing stages.
Mexico took full advantage of their numerical superiority midway through the second half. A precise cross from Roberto Alvarado found striker Raúl Jiménez at the back post, and the experienced forward headed home to seal the victory for the hosts.
While the result was a disappointing start to the tournament, McKenzie struck a positive tone in a message posted on social media platform X shortly after the match.
“You lost like the champs that you are today, you didn’t humiliate us, you gave undeserved respect to the Mexicans on the field,” McKenzie wrote.
“We have a team here that can go very far. Let’s not give up on this team South Africa. Let us stand behind our Boyz.”

The minister’s message reflects a belief that Bafana Bafana remain capable of recovering from the setback despite the difficult opening result.
In the other Group A fixture, South Korea came from behind to defeat Czech Republic 2-1, giving the Asians an early advantage in the group standings.
The result means South Africa will be eager to secure points in their next match to avoid falling behind in the race for qualification.
Bafana Bafana’s attention now turns to a pivotal encounter against Czechia next Thursday in Atlanta.
With their World Cup campaign still in its early stages, Broos and his squad will be hoping to bounce back strongly and keep their hopes of advancing from Group A alive.
While the opening result was not what South African supporters wanted, McKenzie’s message has set the tone for the days ahead: the tournament is far from over, and Bafana Bafana still have an opportunity to write a different story.
