Two Hlogotlou Police Officers Arrested for Alleged Corruption Activities

Two police officers, a Detective Sergeant and a Constable, stationed at the Hlogotlou SAPS in the Sekhukhune District have been arrested.

The duo was arrested on January 16 by the members of Provincial Unti Corruption Unit and Tactical Response Team (TRT) for corruption and defeating the ends of justice for the November 2024 assault GBH case.

The Detective Sergeant was allocated a case docket of assault GBH to conduct an investigation.

During his investigation, he recovered an unlicensed firearm that was used to assault the victim.

He took the firearm and allegedly instructed the suspect to pay the victim an amount of R1 500.00 and to withdraw the case.

“The suspect made a payment through an electronic ewallet, using the victim cellphone number. The police officer took the victim cellphone and withdrew an amount of R1500.00. He gave the victim R700.00, and then he took the remaining R800.00 for himself,” said the police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba.

Mashaba said the corruption incident came to light, and a case was registered and referred to the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigation Unit for further handling.

The Detective Sergeant (now a suspect) was accused of dealing in dagga at police station holding cells by a known suspect on 17 November 2024.

Two days later (19 November 2024), the same Sergeant went to search a house of suspect accusing him of dealing in dagga.

“The Sergeant and his colleague, a Constable, conducted a search and found dagga in the house. Instead of effecting the arrest, they demanded a kickback of R2500.00. They took R1000.00 from the suspect’s pockets and told him that they would come again for the remaining balance of R1500.00,” added Mashaba.

The same police officers came back to collect the money from the victim’s house.

However, while waiting for the money, the victim’s mother went to them.

Then, the police drove off. Fortunately, the security officer gave chase until they intercepted them.

The case docket was registered and investigated by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, following meticulous and thorough investigations, the suspects were apprehended.

They will appear before Nebo Magistrate’s Court today [January 19] facing charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The court outcome will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
