Sundowns End Pirates’ 14-Match Run as Ouaddou Reacts to FNB Stadium Defeat

The Betway Premiership title race took a dramatic turn at the FNB Stadium after Mamelodi Sundowns secured a crucial 2–1 victory over league leaders Orlando Pirates in a result that has tightened the battle at the top.

In a high-intensity clash between South Africa’s two heavyweights, it was Brayan León who proved decisive. The Sundowns forward struck twice in quick succession – in the 36th and 40th minutes – to stun the Buccaneers and hand the visitors firm control before halftime.

Pirates, who entered the match unbeaten in 14 league outings, responded immediately after the restart. Patrick Maswanganyi pulled one back in the 47th minute when his effort took a telling deflection and found the back of the net, reigniting hopes among the home supporters.

Despite sustained pressure in the second half, Orlando Pirates were unable to find an equaliser as Sundowns held firm to claim maximum points in one of the most significant fixtures of the Betway Premiership season.

Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side remain top of the table on 38 points, but Mamelodi Sundowns have now reduced the gap to just three points, moving up to 35 and firmly reasserting themselves in the title conversation.

With several matches still to be played, the outcome at the FNB Stadium could prove to be a pivotal moment in the 2025/26 campaign.

Following the defeat, Ouaddou acknowledged the disappointment but insisted his players must remain focused and positive as the season continues.

“It’s football. Of course there is disappointment from us, from the result, but we are not going to have our heads down,” Ouaddou said after the match.

“We need to be proud – not of the loss – but of what the guys have achieved over the last three or four months. The journey must continue because we still have a lot of games. We need to wash our heads, be positive, because we have a match in the Nedbank Cup coming soon and then another important game the week after.”

His comments underline Pirates’ determination to avoid a slip in momentum despite the setback against their closest rivals.

There will be little time for reflection as both teams switch focus to cup competition this weekend.

Orlando Pirates host National First Division outfit Casric Stars in the Nedbank Cup Round of 16 at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, a fixture they will be expected to navigate successfully.

Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, travel to the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium to face TS Galaxy in what promises to be another demanding encounter.

With the Betway Premiership title race now separated by just three points, and knockout football on the horizon, the pressure is mounting. If Saturday night’s showdown was any indication, the battle between Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns is far from settled – and the road to the championship may have just become even more unpredictable.
