“Criticism Is Ridiculous” – Broos Defends Sibisi as Pirates Captain Responds with Statement Win
Hugo Broos has come out strongly in defence of Nkosinathi Sibisi, dismissing recent criticism of the Orlando Pirates captain while confirming his place in the latest South Africa national football team squad.
The Bafana Bafana head coach addressed the controversy after naming his 23-man squad for upcoming international friendlies against Panama national football team, scheduled for 27 March at the Moses Mabhida Stadium and 31 March at the DHL Stadium.
The matches form part of South Africa’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers set to resume in June.
Sibisi’s inclusion had sparked debate following his recent penalty miss during Pirates’ Nedbank Cup exit against Casric Stars – a moment that drew criticism from sections of supporters.
However, Broos firmly rejected the backlash, labelling it unfair and misplaced.
“Being under pressure because you miss a penalty is the most ridiculous thing you can imagine,” Broos said when addressing the media.
“He took his responsibility as captain. He missed it – he’s not the first player to miss a penalty. When you criticise a player for that, then you don’t know anything about football.”
The Belgian mentor also emphasised that stepping up in high-pressure situations is a sign of leadership rather than a weakness.

While debate continued off the field, Sibisi delivered a powerful response where it matters most – on the pitch.
The defender captained Pirates to a commanding 6–0 victory over TS Galaxy in a Betway Premiership clash at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.
The emphatic win propelled Pirates to the top of the league standings on 51 points, moving them ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who have a game in hand.
It was a result that not only reinforced Pirates’ title ambitions but also underlined Sibisi’s leadership during a period of scrutiny.
Attention now turns to the national team, where Sibisi is expected to play a key role as South Africa fine-tunes preparations for upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The back-to-back friendlies against Panama will provide Broos with an opportunity to assess his squad and build momentum ahead of the crucial fixtures in June.
For Sibisi, the call-up represents both trust from the national coach and a chance to silence critics on the international stage.
As Broos made clear, the debate may continue – but from his perspective, the Pirates captain remains a vital figure for both club and country.
