“We Need the Yellow Nation” – Lunga Rallies Fans as Sundowns Chase Top Spot Against Stellenbosch
Mamelodi Sundowns have a chance to reclaim control of the Betway Premiership title race this evening – and defender Divine Lunga believes their supporters could make all the difference.
The Brazilians host Stellenbosch FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm, knowing that victory would lift them back to the summit of the standings.
Sundowns head into the clash sitting second on the Betway Premiership table with 56 points from 23 matches, just two points behind leaders Orlando Pirates, who have played two games more.
With games in hand and a superior goal difference of +30 – having scored 42 goals and conceded just 12 – the Tshwane giants remain firmly in control of their own destiny as the title race intensifies.
A win at Loftus would not only see them leapfrog Pirates but also reinforce their status as favourites heading into the final stretch of the campaign.
Speaking to the club’s media team after Sundowns secured their place in the CAF Champions League final with a commanding aggregate victory over Espérance de Tunis on Saturday, Lunga emphasised the importance of home support.
“It’s a good thing, especially when you are playing at home and you see the Yellow Nation behind us, supporting us with everything,” Lunga said via Sundowns media.
“It feels great when you see good support like this in our home ground. I wish each and every game we are going to play, the supporters will come in numbers and support us. That’s what we want – it will drive us to give more.”

Sundowns are expected to rely on that backing as they juggle domestic ambitions with continental commitments.
Miguel Cardoso’s side arrive in red-hot form, having won their last 10 Betway Premiership matches. Their recent CAF Champions League semi-final success has further boosted confidence, with Sundowns reaching the final for the second consecutive season.
However, a congested fixture schedule and the looming continental final could lead to squad rotation as they aim to maintain momentum on multiple fronts.
Stellenbosch, currently ninth on the table with 31 points from 24 matches, head into the encounter as underdogs. While they have shown glimpses of quality – including a recent 3–1 victory over Sekhukhune United – consistency has remained an issue.
Their record away against top opposition also presents a significant challenge heading into this fixture.
History strongly favours Sundowns in this matchup. The Pretoria-based side have won their last five Betway Premiership encounters against Stellenbosch, underlining their dominance in recent meetings.
With the stakes rising on both domestic and continental fronts, all eyes will be on Loftus Versfeld – where Sundowns have the opportunity to turn pressure into pole position once again.
