“We Are Preparing to Win” – Ncikazi Sets the Tone as Soweto Derby Title Battle Takes Centre Stage
The Soweto Derby returns with far more than pride at stake, as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs prepare for a Betway Premiership showdown that could have a defining impact on the title race.
With kickoff scheduled for 3:00pm, all eyes will once again turn to the FNB Stadium, where the league’s top contenders are set to collide in one of the most anticipated fixtures on the South African football calendar.
Pirates head into the clash with momentum and belief, having secured a commanding 3–0 victory in the previous derby meeting. That result remains fresh in memory – but this time, the stakes are significantly higher.
The Buccaneers currently sit at the top of the Betway Premiership standings with 58 points from 25 matches, following a crucial win over AmaZulu FC in their most recent outing.
However, the title race remains finely balanced. Mamelodi Sundowns are just one point behind and still hold a game in hand after their recent draw against Stellenbosch FC.
Assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi has made it clear that Pirates are approaching the derby with a singular objective.
“We are preparing to win. We know what is at stake, we know what is required, and that is the preparation for us,” Ncikazi told the Pirates media team.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining focus amid the noise and pressure that surrounds a fixture of this magnitude.
“The outside noise can be a distraction – the perception, the occasion – but we try to focus the players on what will happen on the field. If we apply ourselves and impose our identity, that has been working for us, and that’s what we will try to do.”

For Chiefs, the derby presents a critical opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table.
Amakhosi currently sit third with 46 points from 24 matches following a goalless draw against Polokwane City FC last weekend.
The contrast in league positions adds another layer of intrigue to the encounter, with Pirates aiming to tighten their grip on top spot, while Chiefs look to reignite their challenge.
Beyond the numbers and standings, the Soweto Derby is rarely predictable. Form often takes a back seat when these two giants meet, and moments of quality – or lapses in concentration – can quickly change the course of the game.
For Pirates, victory would strengthen their position at the summit and potentially create breathing room in a tightly contested title race.
With pressure mounting and the league entering a decisive phase, this latest chapter of South Africa’s most iconic rivalry carries weight far beyond the final whistle.
One question now looms large: will Pirates take another step toward the title – or can Chiefs rise to the occasion and rewrite the narrative?
