Springboks Extend Winning Start as Erasmus Explains Bold Scotland Gamble
The Springboks maintained their unbeaten start to the inaugural Nations Championship with a hard-fought 42-28 victory over Scotland at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday, while head coach Rassie Erasmus said the extensive changes to his team were designed to strengthen South Africa’s squad for the challenges ahead.
The victory came just a week after the Springboks’ convincing win over England, with Erasmus making 10 changes to his starting XV as he continued to test the depth of his squad.
The result leaves South Africa level with New Zealand on 10 log points at the top of the Southern Hemisphere conference, with the Springboks occupying first place on points difference.
Reflecting on the match, Erasmus said the changes were a necessary part of building a squad capable of competing throughout the international season.
“Sometimes we must put our personal goals to one side of how many games you’ve won in a row or even putting winning this championship on the line so that you can know who can do what,” Erasmus told Springboks.rugby.
The Springbok coach said players can only be properly assessed when they are given opportunities against quality opposition.
“If you don’t make those calls you would never know. When do you do it? Are you always going to do it when you play a team that’s not of this calibre? Because I think they are a great team. That’s how you find out,” he added.
The Springboks will now shift their attention to next Saturday’s Nations Championship clash against Wales at Hollywoodbets Kings Park in Durban as they look to maintain their perfect start to the competition.
