Boxing SA Leadership Changes: Buhlalu Steps Down, New Acting Appointments
Boxing South Africa has confirmed a series of leadership changes aimed at maintaining operational continuity and strengthening its structures.
Irvin “Pretty Boy” Buhlalu has stepped down as Chairperson of the Sanctioning Committee with immediate effect, citing personal reasons. A former Olympian and South African champion, Buhlalu spent more than eight years on the committee, including time as its chair.
Reflecting on the move, he said: “I needed to take this break. I will not be lost to the sport of boxing. I will bounce back when the time is right. Boxing is in my blood.”
In a statement released on Thursday, BSA thanked him for his long service and contribution. In the interim, seasoned boxing expert Droeks Malan has been appointed Acting Chairperson. The organisation is also looking to bring additional skilled members onto the committee. Day-to-day sanctioning work continues without disruption, and pending matters remain on schedule.

Separately, Lehlohonolo Ramagole has left his post as Provincial Manager for Gauteng, Free State and North West. His last day was 5 September 2026. On 8 September he formally said goodbye to licensees, colleagues and fellow provincial managers. BSA acknowledged his dedicated work in developing the sport across the three provinces.
Lebogang Phatlane has been appointed Acting Provincial Manager for the same region. A full-time staff member in the Operations Directorate at BSA head office, he holds both an Advanced Diploma and a National Diploma in Sport Management. He will be supported by experienced ring official Thabo Spampool, who will oversee tournament supervision in the three provinces. Both were introduced to licensees on 8 September and received a warm welcome.
BSA says the changes form part of its ongoing focus on leadership renewal, capacity building and operational efficiency while it continues its mandate to regulate, develop and promote boxing in South Africa.
