How a Rural Sports Dream Is Transforming Youth Opportunities in Tweefontein
While major sporting events often dominate South Africa’s urban centres, a community-driven initiative in rural Mpumalanga is proving that talent development and youth empowerment can thrive far from the spotlight.
What began as a response to the lack of school sports opportunities in rural communities has grown into a significant annual event that brings together young athletes, local businesses and residents from across the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality.
Founded by local sports enthusiast Lagosh Mpila, the Asibakhuliseni Sports Academy launched its Winter Games in 2023 to address what many see as a longstanding challenge in rural South Africa – limited access to organised sport and youth development opportunities.
Now in its fourth edition, the Asibakhuliseni Sports Academy Winter Games will take place from 13 to 16 June at the SI Mashia Sports Grounds in Tweefontein K, near KwaMhlanga. Activities on each day are scheduled to begin at 10:00am.
Giving Rural Youth a Platform
According to Mpila, the initiative was born out of concern that many learners in rural areas are missing out on the benefits of school sport due to historical neglect and a lack of resources.
The annual tournament aims to create opportunities for young people to showcase their talents, stay active and engage positively within their communities.
This year’s event will feature several sporting and community activities, including football, netball, aerobics, a colour run and a social market.
In the open football competition, teams expected to participate include Mthidhla FC, Phaphama FC and Youngsters FC, while organisers have confirmed that one spot remains available for interested clubs.
The Under-15 and Under-17 football divisions will feature Royal Classic FC, St Mary’s, Walter Aces and Kwagga City.
Youth Day Celebration at the Heart of the Event
The tournament programme has been structured around Youth Day celebrations, with the main event scheduled for 16 June.
Saturday, 13 June, will host the Under-15 football Top Four competition, while Sunday, 14 June, will feature the Under-17 Top Four tournament.
The festivities will culminate on Youth Day with the Open Soccer Top Four competition, Under-19 and Open Netball matches, aerobics sessions, a colour run and a community social market where local entrepreneurs will have an opportunity to display and sell their products.
A special legends match between RDP Masters and Thembisile Hani Masters is also expected to attract significant interest from spectators.
Mpila said organisers deliberately aligned the closing event with Youth Day to create a meaningful celebration for local residents.
“We want this to be an event where the entire community comes together to celebrate Youth Day. We often see major Youth Day celebrations taking place in urban areas, but we want people in our community to feel proud of celebrating right here at home,” Mpila told SizaNazo-365.
“We chose sport because it brings people together, creates opportunities for young talent to be discovered and promotes healthy lifestyles. We believe there is no better way to celebrate Youth Day than through sport.”
More Than Just Sport
While the focus remains on youth development, Mpila emphasised that the event is designed to be inclusive for all age groups.
He explained that the inclusion of open tournaments and the social market is intended to transform the occasion into a broader family and community gathering.
“Although Youth Day is dedicated to young people, we want everyone in the community to be part of the celebration. That is why we have included open competitions and a social market to make it a true family day.”
Local Businesses Keep the Dream Alive
Organisers have also acknowledged the role played by local government and businesses in sustaining the project over the past four years.
Mpila expressed gratitude to the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality and long-time supporters including Mthidhla Group, Dr Segooa, Kgarebana Boutique Guesthouse and Esinenhlanhla Logistics.
Despite the event’s growth, securing sponsorship from larger corporations remains a challenge.
“Getting sponsorship from major companies has not been easy, but we are not giving up. We will continue trying because we believe in this project.”
“We are extremely grateful to the local businesses that have supported us from the beginning. Without their contribution, this initiative would not be possible.”

As the countdown to Youth Day begins, the event stands as a powerful example of how grassroots sport can inspire communities, nurture talent and create opportunities where they are needed most.
