Sundowns Make History in Morocco as CAF Champions League Glory Returns to South Africa
Mamelodi Sundowns have etched their name deeper into African football history after securing their second CAF Champions League title with a hard-fought 2–1 aggregate victory over AS FAR in Rabat on Sunday.
The South African champions held AS FAR to a 1–1 draw in a tense second-leg final at Stade Moulay Abdellah, doing enough to protect the narrow advantage they carried from the first leg.
Leading 1–0 from the opening encounter in South Africa thanks to Aubrey Modiba’s decisive strike, Sundowns arrived in Morocco knowing a disciplined performance would be required against a fired-up AS FAR side backed by a passionate home crowd.
The hosts pressed aggressively in search of an equaliser on aggregate, but Sundowns remained composed under pressure and delivered a crucial blow just before halftime.
Midfielder Teboho Mokoena produced a stunning strike in first-half stoppage time to silence the stadium and hand the visitors a massive advantage in the tie.
AS FAR responded later in the match to level the score on the night, but the Moroccan side could not find the additional goal needed to force extra time as Sundowns’ defence stood firm during the closing stages.
The triumph marks Sundowns’ second CAF Champions League crown after first conquering the continent in 2016. More significantly, it makes them the first South African club to win Africa’s premier club competition twice.
The latest success further strengthens Sundowns’ growing dominance on the continent and adds another milestone to an era already filled with domestic and international achievements.
By lifting the trophy, the Tshwane giants have also secured qualification for several major international tournaments, including the CAF Super Cup, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup.
