The Springbok Women got South Africa’s rugby celebrations underway with a landmark 34-21 victory over the USA Women in the opening match of Saturday’s double-header.

It was a breakthrough result for the national women’s team, ending a 15-year wait for a win over the Women’s Eagles.

South Africa produced an entertaining attacking display, crossing the try line through Ayanda Malinga, Unam Tose, Babalwa Latsha, Logan Welman, who scored twice, and Vainah Ubisi. Jakkie Cilliers added two successful conversions to cap off an outstanding team performance.

The victory is another encouraging sign of the progress being made by the Springbok Women as they continue building towards future international competitions.

  1. Springboks Sweep Aside England to Launch Nations Championship in Style

The Springboks made a powerful statement in their opening Nations Championship fixture, defeating England 45-21 with a dominant seven-try performance at Ellis Park Stadium.

South Africa ran in tries through Thomas du Toit, Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Grant Williams, Jesse Kriel, Malcolm Marx and Ben-Jason Dixon to secure a bonus-point victory in front of a jubilant Johannesburg crowd.

Speaking after the match, Erasmus said the team drew motivation from last year’s painful defeat at Ellis Park.

“We did have flashbacks to last year… we know how it feels if we don’t rectify things in the second half,” Erasmus told Springboks.rugby.

He added: “We had to be really honest with one another at halftime, but luckily we had that game last year and we could rectify things during the halftime chat.”
