Orlando Pirates’ Tshegofatso Mabasa Joins Stellenbosch FC in January Shake-Up
Stellenbosch FC have moved to reinforce their squad for the remainder of the campaign, completing the loan signings of Tshegofatso Mabasa and Kobamelo Kodisang from Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively. The developments were first reported by iDiski Times, which confirmed that both players have joined the Cape Winelands side on deals running until the end of the season.
According to the update received by iDiski Times on Sunday morning, the two attackers trained with their new teammates for the first time shortly after the paperwork was finalised. They were later joined by Mosa Lebusa, further strengthening Stellenbosch’s options, while Wayde Jooste had already been confirmed as a new arrival prior to the turn of the year.
Mabasa and Kodisang arrive with considerable experience at top-flight level. Mabasa, in particular, has established a reputation as a reliable goalscorer in the Premier Soccer League, having claimed the Betway Premiership Golden Boot in the 2023/24 season. Kodisang, meanwhile, brings valuable international exposure, having previously played abroad.
The additions come at an important moment for Stellenbosch, who are looking to turn their season around after a difficult start. Stellies currently sit 14th on the Betway Premiership table, having collected 12 points from 14 matches. That return includes three wins and three draws, leaving the club hovering just above the relegation zone as the season approaches its decisive phase.

From an individual perspective, Mabasa has scored four goals in nine appearances across all competitions for the Buccaneers this season, underlining his potential to add immediate firepower to Stellenbosch’s attack. His presence could prove crucial for a side that has struggled for consistency in front of goal.
The pair will now work under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Gavin Hunt. Hunt was brought in following the departure of Steve Barker, who left Stellenbosch to take up a role with Tanzanian giants Simba SC. The coaching change, coupled with the arrival of several experienced players, signals a clear intent from the club to stabilise performances and climb the table in the second half of the season.
With Mabasa’s proven scoring pedigree and Kodisang’s versatility and experience, Stellenbosch will hope their latest recruits can make an immediate impact. As the league campaign resumes, the coming weeks are likely to be pivotal in determining whether these loan moves can help Stellies steer clear of danger and re-establish themselves as a competitive force in the Premiership.
