Pirates Fans Are Taking Over PSL Stadiums — Ouaddou Reacts as Buccaneers Set Attendance Standard

Orlando Pirates’ growing dominance this season is not only being felt on the pitch – it is increasingly visible and audible in the stands.

Week after week, stadiums across South Africa are filling up with black and white as the Buccaneers continue to attract massive crowds, prompting head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou to publicly salute the club’s supporters for their unwavering loyalty and energy.

Speaking recently, Ouaddou acknowledged the crucial role played by Pirates fans, describing their presence as a driving force behind the team’s performances. According to the Buccaneers mentor, the support from the stands is deeply felt by both the players and the technical staff.

“When we don’t hear the sounds, we don’t hear them singing, pushing us, it’s like a plate without taste,” Ouaddou explained. “So it’s a game without taste. And when we have our fans behind us, you can see the rhythm, you can see the motivation of the players – it’s completely another game.”

The Pirates coach went on to highlight just how closely the team’s intensity is linked to the atmosphere created by supporters.

“If you hear our fans just drop in terms of singing, in terms of support, you see the rhythm drop as well,” he added.

During the 2025/26 season, Orlando Pirates have emerged as the club with the strongest matchday attendance in South African football. While rivals Kaizer Chiefs continue to boast the largest overall fan base and social media following, it is Pirates who are currently setting the standard when it comes to packed stadiums and vocal, active support.

This surge in attendance has been fuelled by consistent performances, a strong winning mentality, and recent silverware – elements that have reignited belief among the Buccaneers faithful.

The scale of Pirates’ support was underlined last week when the club became the first side to register a sold-out match in 2026. Notably, the fixture came against Magesi FC at the newly renamed Orlando Amstel Arena – a clear indication that fans are turning out in huge numbers regardless of the opposition.

For many observers, that milestone confirmed what has been building all season: Orlando Pirates currently boast the most engaged and committed matchday following in the Premier Soccer League.

Ouaddou once again highlighted the impact of the supporters following Pirates’ emphatic 4–1 victory over Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. The coach credited the fans’ passion for inspiring the team to deliver a dominant performance away from home.

The sight and sound of Pirates supporters filling large sections of the Durban venue further reinforced the idea that the Buccaneers are turning every match into a near-home fixture.

With the season entering a decisive phase, Ouaddou has urged the Buccaneers faithful to keep filling the stands, especially in Johannesburg.

“If you have to come back to the arena, one arena has to be full,” he said. “I hope every game in Johannesburg will be full. It’s a crucial moment and we need them – we need them to continue to support us until the end of May.”

Attention now shifts back to Betway Premiership action, with log leaders Orlando Pirates set to host Marumo Gallants at the Orlando Amstel Arena this Saturday. A victory would see the Buccaneers open a six-point gap over title rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, adding even more significance to the encounter.

Given recent trends, another buzzing atmosphere is expected – and Ouaddou will once again be counting on the club’s supporters to play their part as Pirates push to tighten their grip on the title race.

One thing is clear: Orlando Pirates are not just winning matches – they are winning the stands.
