Mamelodi Sundowns in Turmoil as Tactical Leak Allegations Emerge Before MC Alger Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns have suspended performance analyst Mario Masha amid allegations of leaking tactical information ahead of their crucial CAF Champions League fixture against MC Alger this Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, SABC Sport reports.

According to the report, Masha – regarded as one of the club’s longest-serving technical staff members after joining during Pitso Mosimane’s tenure – has denied the allegations. However, he has been placed on precautionary suspension pending further developments.

The timing is significant, as Sundowns prepare to host MC Alger, coached by former Downs mentor Rulani Mokwena, in a decisive final group-stage match. The outcome will determine which team advances to the quarterfinals alongside either group leaders Al Hilal or Saint Éloi Lupopo.

Sundowns’ situation became more precarious following their 1-1 draw away to Lupopo in Lubumbashi on Sunday. That result left Miguel Cardoso’s side needing a victory against the Algerian champions to secure progression to the knockout stages.

In the aftermath of the draw, Cardoso made comments that appeared to allude to concerns around sensitive information ahead of the clash.

“We hope that on the day of the match we have a full stadium to support the team, and nothing more. I hope the opponent doesn’t guess or know how we are going to play. I hope that is controlled so we can make it a fair game from our side,” said the Portuguese mentor.

Shortly after those remarks, news of Masha’s suspension surfaced, with the analyst alleged to have been the source of the tactical leak ahead of Mokwena’s anticipated return to Loftus.

While Sundowns deal with internal turbulence, MC Alger appear to be rallying strong support back home. According to content shared on the club’s official X account, the Algerian Ligue 1 champions received a passionate send-off from supporters as they departed for South Africa on Tuesday.

Video footage showed a convoy of vehicles filled with fans hooting and waving flags, while firecrackers lit up the atmosphere and plumes of smoke filled the air. Supporters were seen singing and dancing outside the Abdul Rahman Auf-Baba Hamoud Centre as Mokwena and his squad made their way to the airport ahead of the trip to Pretoria.

The backdrop sets the stage for a charged encounter, both on and off the pitch. For Sundowns, the focus will be on securing the required result to extend their continental campaign, while ensuring any off-field distractions do not derail preparations.

With quarterfinal qualification on the line and emotions running high, Saturday’s showdown promises to be one of the most closely watched fixtures of the CAF Champions League group stage.
