Zolani Tete Dies: South African Boxing Mourns Former Two-Division World Champion
South African boxing is mourning the death of former two-division world champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete, who has died at the age of 38.
Boxing South Africa (BSA) confirmed the news in a statement issued on Friday, 21 August 2026, saying it had learnt of Tete’s passing with “profound shock and sadness”. The incident reportedly occurred that evening in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape.
Tete leaves behind a remarkable legacy as one of South Africa’s few boxers to win world titles in two weight divisions.
The Mdantsane-born fighter first reached the top of the sport when he captured the IBF junior-bantamweight world title in Japan in 2014. He later became WBO bantamweight world champion, cementing his status among South Africa’s boxing greats.
His career also produced one of the most extraordinary moments in boxing history.
In 2017, Tete successfully defended his WBO bantamweight title against compatriot Siboniso Gonya, stopping him just 11 seconds into the fight. The stunning victory became recognised as the fastest world title defence in boxing history.
Tete was a product of the renowned All Winners Mdantsane boxing stable, which played an important role in his development before he established himself on the international stage.

Beyond his championships and records, BSA described Tete as an icon of South African boxing whose achievements inspired a generation of fighters.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Tete family, his manager Mlandeli Tengimfene, the All-Winners Boxing Club, and Last-Born Boxing Promotions during this incredibly difficult time,” BSA said.
The boxing authority extended its condolences to Tete’s family, friends and the wider boxing fraternity, describing him as a “true warrior and ambassador” for the sport.
BSA said further details regarding official tributes and memorial arrangements would be announced after consultations with the Tete family.
