The Springboks’ 12-match winning run came to an end at Ellis Park on Saturday as the All Blacks claimed a 33-16 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series.
South Africa now face a difficult task if they are to win the series, needing three consecutive victories from this point.
Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus refused to describe the result as catastrophic, pointing out that the team can level the series by winning the next match in Cape Town.
“We’re now in a position where if we want to win the series we have to win three games on the trot,” Erasmus said.
The coach acknowledged that New Zealand were the better side overall and said South Africa’s own mistakes contributed to the defeat.
Erasmus also highlighted the scrum as an area where the Springboks had an advantage, but stressed that dominance in isolated parts of the game was not enough to overcome the All Blacks’ overall performance.
The defeat leaves South Africa with plenty to address before the next encounter, while the All Blacks will take confidence from a statement victory against the world’s top-ranked team.

- Pirates and Golden Arrows Take Narrow MTN8 Semifinal Leads
Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows both secured crucial 1-0 away wins in the first legs of their respective 2026 MTN8 semifinals.
Defending champions Pirates struck against Sekhukhune United at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday, with Deon Hotto scoring shortly before half-time to give the Buccaneers a slender advantage.
Pirates will now return to Orlando Stadium for the second leg next Saturday knowing that a place in the final is within reach.
Golden Arrows produced the bigger surprise of the two results, defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 1-0 at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Junior Dion scored in the 38th minute to hand Abafana Besthende a valuable lead ahead of the return fixture at King Zwelithini Stadium next Sunday.
Neither semifinal is settled, however, with both Sundowns and Sekhukhune still capable of overturning one-goal deficits on home soil.
- Four Arrested in Investigation into Zolani Tete Murder
The investigation into the murder of former world boxing champion Zolani “Last Born” Tete (38) has taken a significant step forward, with four suspects arrested in connection with the killing.
The fourth person who had been taken in for questioning has been released.
Tete was shot dead outside his home in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape on Friday evening.
A 27-year-old woman who was travelling with him was also wounded during the attack and remains in hospital.
Police have confirmed the arrests as investigators continue working to establish the circumstances surrounding the former two-division world champion’s death.
Tete’s killing has sent shockwaves through South African boxing, with tributes continuing to pour in for the former champion.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to build their case.
