Inside Orlando Pirates’ Training Camp as Title Race With Sundowns Heats Up
After an extended festive break – further prolonged by the recently concluded AFCON – Orlando Pirates returned to action with purpose, regrouping more than a week ago for a high-intensity training camp in the North West province. Far from being a routine pre-season gathering, the camp was a calculated reset designed to sharpen the Buccaneers for a decisive second half of the Betway Premiership season.
Pirates remain firmly in the hunt for the league title, a trophy they have not lifted since the historic 2011/12 campaign. Once again, their biggest obstacle is familiar rivals Mamelodi Sundowns, the dominant force in South African football who are chasing an unprecedented ninth consecutive league crown. With the gap between the two sides paper-thin, there is little room for mistakes.
The timing of the North West camp proved especially significant given Pirates’ activity in the January transfer window. The club has moved swiftly to reinforce key areas of the squad, and head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained that the camp was vital in helping new signings adapt quickly to the team’s demands.
Speaking to Orlando Pirates Media, Ouaddou highlighted the importance of unity and shared values within the squad.
“We have some habits in terms of cohesion, in terms of living together. It’s important to include the new players and show them our game model, our team spirit, and our values,” said Ouaddou. “This camp allowed us to sit down, talk, and properly integrate them into the team.”
The Pirates coach also officially welcomed the club’s latest additions, Daniel Msendami and Mpho Chabatsane, who joined from Marumo Gallants, as well as striker Andre de Jong, signed earlier from Stellenbosch FC.
“We are looking forward to them bringing all their qualities and competencies to the team,” Ouaddou added.

The new signings are expected to add depth, energy, and tactical flexibility as Pirates prepare for a demanding run-in. With squad harmony and tactical clarity a priority, the North West camp appears to have laid a solid foundation for what lies ahead.
Focus now shifts back to competitive action. Orlando Pirates are set to resume their Betway Premiership campaign with a challenging away fixture against Sekhukhune United this Saturday. The encounter will be played at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, a venue that has proven difficult for visiting sides.
Meanwhile, the pressure has intensified following developments at the top of the table. Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed first place on Monday after securing a 2–0 victory over Orbit College. The win moved Sundowns to 29 points from 14 matches, pushing Pirates into second place – just one point behind, although the Buccaneers still hold the advantage of two games in hand.
As the title race gathers momentum, the message is unmistakable: every match now carries massive significance. With strengthened squads, renewed focus, and the gap between contenders narrowing, the battle for the Betway Premiership crown is officially on – the Soweto giants know that consistency from here on could define their season.
