Appollis Hails Pirates’ Fighting Spirit as Buccaneers Beat Richards Bay to Reclaim Betway Premiership Summit
Orlando Pirates attacker Oswin Appollis has praised his team’s fighting spirit after the Buccaneers secured a convincing 2–0 victory over Richards Bay FC in a Betway Premiership clash on Wednesday evening at the Orlando Stadium.
Appollis, who was named Man of the Match for his standout performance, played a key role in the victory that lifted Pirates back to the top of the league standings as the title race intensifies.
Pirates controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, dictating the tempo and applying constant pressure in search of the opening goal. Their persistence paid off in the 26th minute when Appollis broke the deadlock.
The forward calmly finished to give the hosts a deserved lead, rewarding Pirates’ attacking intent and sending the Soweto giants into the halftime break ahead.
Richards Bay attempted to mount a response after the interval, showing determination to stay in the contest. However, they struggled to create clear opportunities against a disciplined Pirates defence.
While the visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Pirates continued to threaten going forward and created several chances that could have extended their lead earlier in the match.
The victory was eventually sealed deep into stoppage time. In the 90+5th minute, Evidence Makgopa converted from the penalty spot after Tshepang Moremi was brought down inside the box, ensuring a comfortable 2–0 result for the Buccaneers.

Speaking to Pirates media after the match, Appollis credited the collective effort of the squad and highlighted the importance of securing the three points.
“It was very important to get the three points. I’m very happy with the team performance and overall I just want to give credit to the team for fighting,” said Appollis.
“In the second half we were a bit back, they came to us but we managed to deal with them defensively and we managed to score the goal. As a team, the coaches told us we must score more goals and that is what we are trying to do.”
The victory moves Pirates to the top of the Betway Premiership table with 47 points from 20 matches, level on points with defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who trail only on goal difference.
For Richards Bay, the defeat marked their seventh loss of the season and saw the KwaZulu-Natal side slip from ninth to tenth place with 23 points after 20 matches.
With performances like this, Pirates continue to show that they are serious contenders in what is shaping up to be a thrilling Betway Premiership title race.
