Hugo Broos Explains Shock Brandon Petersen Omission From Bafana Bafana World Cup Squad

Hugo Broos has clarified the reasoning behind the surprise exclusion of Brandon Petersen from South Africa national football team’s final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting the decision had nothing to do with the goalkeeper’s ability.

The Kaizer Chiefs captain was among six players cut from the preliminary squad when Broos confirmed his final selection at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guesthouse on Wednesday evening.

Also omitted were Brooklyn Poggenpoel, Patrick Maswanganyi, Thabiso Monyane, Thapelo Morena and Leohang Maboe.

Petersen’s exclusion sparked debate across South African football circles, particularly after the goalkeeper played a key role in Chiefs’ resurgence during the 2025/26 campaign. The shot-stopper was one of Amakhosi’s standout performers as the club secured a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership.

However, competition for places behind Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams proved intense.

Sipho Chaine strengthened his case after an outstanding season with Orlando Pirates, where he kept a record-extending 21 clean sheets during the club’s title-winning campaign. Meanwhile, Ricardo Goss impressed with crucial performances that helped Siwelele FC avoid relegation.

Speaking about the decision, Broos explained that the final call came down to familiarity and integration within the squad environment rather than technical quality.

“Petersen was only two days with us. I know Petersen as a goalkeeper,” Broos as per iDiski Times.

“What I said to him yesterday evening after we came back from the announcement – I had to choose between Goss, Chaine and you. I had to choose two goalkeepers.

“When you look at the quality of those guys, I can’t choose because they have the same quality. So then you look at another level, and for me it was integration.”

The Belgian coach admitted that limited time in camp made it difficult to fully assess Petersen’s personality and reaction within the group dynamic.

“We had only one good training session, and that was Tuesday,” Broos explained.

“I don’t know Brandon as a human being. In two days you can’t know him – how he reacts if he doesn’t play, how he reacts in certain situations. That made me not choose Brandon. It’s not a question of quality. It’s just integration.”
