Mosimane’s New Bafana Era Begins with Guinea Clash – and a Late Squad Change

Pitso Mosimane’s second spell in charge of Bafana Bafana is underway, and the new era already includes its first forced adjustment.

Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Lebohang Maboe has been ruled out of the current FIFA window after twisting his ankle. A scan confirmed he will not recover in time, according to team doctor Dr Tshepo Molobi. In his place, SAFA has called up Orlando Pirates winger Tshepang Moremi.

The change was confirmed on Tuesday. Moremi is no stranger to the national team, having featured in the latter stages of Hugo Broos’ tenure. His inclusion maintains a Pirates presence in a squad that already draws several players from the Buccaneers.

South Africa host Guinea at Orlando Stadium on Saturday, 26 September, in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. They then travel to Cairo to face Eritrea on 30 September before staying in Egypt for a friendly against the Pharaohs on 4 October.

These three matches give Mosimane an early look at his available group as he begins assessing personnel for the new cycle. The Guinea fixture will be his first competitive game back in charge.
