Pirates Eye Top Spot But Arrows Stand in the Way in Soweto Showdown
Orlando Pirates have a chance to tighten the Betway Premiership title race as they host Lamontville Golden Arrows in a crucial clash at the Orlando Stadium this evening.
Kickoff is set for 7:30pm, with the Buccaneers aiming to build on a surge in form that has reignited their push for the league crown.
Orlando Pirates head into the fixture sitting second on the Betway Premiership table with 51 points from 22 matches, just two points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
With the season entering a decisive phase, every result carries added weight – and Pirates know a victory could significantly boost their title ambitioons.
Confidence is high within the squad following a dominant 6–0 victory over TS Galaxy in their previous league outing. That performance highlighted their attacking quality, while their recent run of four wins and one draw in five matches underlines their consistency.
At the back, Pirates have been equally impressive, conceding just nine goals all season – the best defensive record in the league.
Speaking to Pirates media, assistant coach Mandla Ncikazi revealed that the team used the recent FIFA international break to fine-tune key aspects of their game.

“We’re coming from a FIFA break – it gave us the opportunity to work on details, on groups and individuals,” Ncikazi said tahead of the match.
“We know our challenges and our strengths. It will be a tough match against Golden Arrows, but we just have to win. Based on the work we’ve done, we believe we can overcome the opponent and get three points.”
Lamontville Golden Arrows arrive in Soweto with their own objectives. Currently eighth on the table with 28 points, Abafana Bes’thende are pushing for a top-eight finish and will be encouraged by their recent 1–0 win over Sekhukhune United.
Their recent form – two wins, two draws and one defeat in their last five matches – suggests a team capable of competing, even against higher-ranked opposition.
Despite Arrows’ resilience, recent head-to-head results heavily favour Pirates. The Buccaneers have won their last five league meetings between the sides, including a 3–1 victory earlier this season.
That record will give the home side added belief as they look to maintain their dominance in this fixture.
With the Betway Premiership title race heating up, this is far more than a routine midweek fixture.
For Pirates, it is an opportunity to keep pace – or even gain ground – in the battle for top spot. For Arrows, it is a chance to disrupt one of the league’s in-form sides and strengthen their own campaign.
As kickoff approaches in Soweto, all eyes will be on whether Pirates can take another decisive step toward the title – or if Golden Arrows can spring a surprise under the lights.
